Connecticut Chiropractor Ordered to
Stop Doing Live Blood Analysis
Stephen Barrett, M.D.
Live blood analysis —also called live blood cell analysis, dark-field video analysis, nutritional blood analysis, and several other names—is carried out by viewing blood from the patient's fingertip at high magnification with a dark-field microscope that forwards the image to a television monitor for the patient and practitioner to see. The results are then used as a basis for prescribing dietary supplement products. Although dark-field microscopy has legitimate uses, live blood cell analysis is a fraud. To curb its use, the federal agency that oversees laboratories has ruled that any facility performing this procedure must be approved for complex testing, a standard that is impractical for small health-care facilities to meet. In 2005, as shown in the document below, the Connecticut Department of Health determined that Joyce Martin , D.C., of Providence, Rhode Island did not have the necessary approval and ordered her to stop doing the test.
